Almost forgot about this one! (I was away for the last weekend, so I’m behind on drawing this thing. Sorry!)
Hello there Finns and everyone else, I’d like to share with you the manga “Finlandia” by Chiba Satomi (千葉智美). Released in the early 90’s by Asuka Comics and probably has a fancier cover than this as well. This copy however, was found in a bookshelf at the Finnish Embassy here in Tokyo a little while ago during cleaning. I finally read it today and I have no words.
The plot: Modern time girl Aino studies at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and receives a pocket watch that plays the Finlandia Hymn when you open it (in the old clock store at Aleksanterinkatu). She goes to some old dude for something music related, then a huge storm happens, a tree in the garden is hit by lightning, she falls into the pond and wakes up in 1904.
In a house with two guys super much part against the opposition against Russification. (Of course, they think she’s a boy. Dear lord, her hair is short and she wears pants!) Basically, they’re planning to get rid of Bobrikov. They think she’s a Russian spy, she proves she’s not one to mr. Blond Guy (soon to be love interest) by playing her casette tape finlandia hymn (she had a walkman, wohoo!) that she was casually carrying along when everything happened. Bla bla bla, LOVE and promise to make sure the girl receives the watch in the future, plan to kill Bobrikov, Mr. Black hair betrays them, people die. But! Their wagon driver, a young man named Schauman, sees it all and gets super motivated for revenge and liberating the suffering people of Finland. Girl ends up back in the future. Eugen Schauman shoots Bobrikov and himself (who would’ve guessed??) and Finland becomes independent in 1917. Ah.
I think it might be the most finno-nationalistic book I’ve ever read outside of Fänrik Ståls sägner. And it’s a sparkly and flowery shoujo manga by a Japanese woman. Bizarre and beautiful. But most of all, extremely ridiculous. I think my favorite part was when I snorted out loud when the wagon driver was first called by name.
This thing needs to be translated. I need to get my hands on a scanner and then it will happen. Trust me.
SANDRA I NEED TO READ THIS OMG
I PROMISE I WILL TRANSLATE IT. YOU HAVE MY WORD.
